5/23/2023 0 Comments Little women & good wives![]() ![]() Alcott balances what was a pervading social norm of the time well with characters who dwell between the two extremes of total domesticity and entire independence. This is not why I originally enjoyed the series. The result is a steady paced source of good old fashioned entertainment. ![]() But it is not merely the element of one of these themes that has garnered it success-it is the blending of them all. It may be seen as an early cry for female independence (at a time when it was actually needed), a quest for self-success, a story of love, or simply a portrayal of simpler, yet turbulent, times. It has been viewed through many lenses, and has withstood the test of both adoring and critical eyes. We read it as children, identifying with the young characters, and then we re-read it as adults, realizing anew the themes that may have once escaped us. ![]() What can I say about this magnificent series that hasn’t been praised before? It has survived the roiling waves of the literary ocean since 1868 with great ease and nobility. ![]() ![]() The Justice League is usually comprised of highly popular heroes (like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman) who generally operate independently, but would team up to tackle more ruthless villains of world epic menace. After having made its first appearance in The Brave and the Bold #28 in March 1960, the Justice League got quickly its own title and became one of DC’s best-selling title. When editor Julius Schwartz asked writer Gardner Fox to reintroduce his creation, the JSA, he decided to rename it the “Justice League of America”, a name he thought would appeal better to young readers. A team from the 1940s, the JSA title was canceled due to to a decline in sales, as superheroes were in decline after World War II. ![]() One of the most famous superhero teams today, The Justice League was conceived as a revival of the Justice Society of America. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Exit music rebus![]() ![]() The added mystery in this outstanding crime fiction adds to the tension, and forces Rebus to examine his life’s work and choices. ![]() “A Heart Full of Headstones” finds Rebus in court - but this time he’s the one on trial though Rankin doesn’t reveal the charges, or the verdict, until the end. “A Heart Full of Headstones,” by Ian Rankin. But Rebus has reconnected with his daughter and granddaughter, and he has a dog, Brillo, who forces him to get out of his rooms. “A Heart Full of Headstones” again shows Rebus as an old man, struggling with health problems brought on by too many years of smoking and bad diet, now living in a first-floor apartment because climbing stairs is too much. Rebus had to retire from the police, but he has never retired from being a detective as an official police consultant or, most of the time, as a private citizen who can’t help but inject himself in investigations. Retirement has never been easy for former Edinburgh police detective John Rebus, making his 24th appearance in the superb “A Heart Full of Headstones.” While Ian Rankin retired his popular character from the police force in 2007’s “Exit Music,” the author has brought his Scottish hero back myriad times. ‘A Heart Full of Headstones’ by Ian Rankin. ![]() Ian Rankin’s news John Rebus novel is “A Heart Full of Headstones.” ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments The nutcracker hoffmann![]() ![]() His original story, called The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, was a bit darker and scarier than the story told in the modern ballet. ![]() Instead, it was originally a story written in 1816 by Prussian author E.T.A. ![]() The Nutcracker did not start out as a ballet.
